Ahead of Makar Sankranti, prices of Sesame, Jaggery and sugar soar

The lockdown and subsequent unseasonal rains had a major impact on sugarcane cultivation. As a result, jaggery prices rose marginally in the retail market. Jaggery, which was Rs 60 per kg before lockdown, has gone up to Rs 70 per kg after lockdown.

Along with coronavirus infection, inflation is also on the rise this year. It has come to light that the prices of sugar, sesame and jaggery have risen after the lockdown. As a result, prices of Chikki and Laddus have also gone up. Due to the lockdown, farmers had planted less sugarcane.

There has also been a marginal increase in the cost of transportation as well. The price of petrol and diesel is now hovering around ₹100/litre and it has had a direct impact on market prices of a lot of goods including sugar.

As per reports, prices of sesame, jaggery and sugar have gone up by 5 to 10 per cent as compared to the last year ahead of Makar Sankranti.

Sesame, jaggery and sugar prices

Sesame is widely used in sweets made during Makar Sankranti. Sesame, which was ₹180 per kg before the lockdown, it has now gone up to ₹200 per kg ahead of Makar Sankranti.

The lockdown and subsequent unseasonal rains had a major impact on sugarcane cultivation. As a result, jaggery prices rose marginally in the retail market. Jaggery, which was ₹60 per kg before lockdown, has gone up to ₹70 per kg after lockdown.

Due to the pandemic, the increase in diesel and petrol prices has proportionally affected the prices of sugar that are been exported to Mumbai and have become more expensive. Sugar, which was ₹34 per kg before lockdown, has risen up to ₹38 per kg after lockdown.
