Seven People Die Daily While Commuting In Mumbai Local: GRP Report

In a recent report released by Government Railway Police (GRP), it was reported that at least seven people were killed daily while commuting on Mumbai’s suburban train network in 2019. Data reveals that a total of 2,691 people were killed while 3,194 people were reportedly injured. The number of deaths in Central Railway was 1,763  whereas it was 928 in Western Railway (WR). 

In the Central Suburban Railway Network, the maximum number of deaths were reported in Kalyan i.e. 331 followed by Kurla at 294. In 2017 and 2018, 3,014 and 2,981 people died respectively on the suburban railway network.

In the recent wake of events wherein 22-year old Dombivali resident Charmi Pasad died while boarding an overcrowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) bound train, Central Railways have come up with various solutions to avoid such fatal incidents in the future.

With a bid to solve the overcrowding problem at Central Railway's Dombivali station for CSMT bound train, Railway authorities have made yellow lines in front of first and second class ladies compartment on platform number 5. They have further stated that if women follow these lines and board train safely it will solve the overcrowding problem. 

However, the main problem is people standing on the footboard and struggle to get in even when the train has started. Even if people stand in line on the platform, everyone rushes once the train has reached the platform even before the train stops and majorly even before other fellow commuters have alighted.

Moreover, the general compartment also faces overcrowding and the possibility of mishap is not just limited to the ladies compartment. Earlier this year, Central Railway was considering the possibility of automated closing doors which has now been discontinued and will be in the second trial round in Western Railway.

The solution is majorly in increasing the frequency of the trains considerably during peak hours instead of allotting the slots to AC trains in which people hardly travel as compared to non AC trains.
