The ambitious Shiv Bhojan Yojana of Maha Vikas Aghadi Government has been getting a good response over the last two days. The aim of this scheme was to feed the poor and the needy, and the report states that providing food for 10 rupees has proven beneficial.

On the first two days of the scheme, i.e. on January 26 and 27, around 11,147 plates and 13,500 plates of food were served respectively. The scheme, which was started on an experimental basis, could not be run in Yavatmal due to the code of conduct by the Legislative Council. They were expected to serve 500 plates per day.

Talking about the same, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that the goal of the scheme is to provide affordable and quality food at Rs 10 per plate. This scheme has been launched at the district headquarters. He futher added that he will have a conversation with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the canteen operators on Tuesday. The department will also look at getting information about the number of plates to be provided in these canteens which will then be enhanced.

The first 50 outlets or canteens have been opened, and the government wants to increase this number in due time. The lunch plate or plate includes two chapatis, one vegetable, rice and dal (lentils). This scheme is managed by the Food and Civil Supplies which serves as the nodal department for implementation across the state. Shiv Sena, which now heads the government had promised the scheme in its election manifesto. This is similar to the Amma Unavagam Yojana in Tamil Nadu and the Indira Canteen in Karnataka.
