Twenty-five families from Kalwa's Maa Kaali chawl were shifted to a safe location after landslide was reported in the locality damaging six houses in total. As per reports, the incident occurred in Thane's Kalwa locality early in the morning on Sunday, August 8, 2021. Reports state that no one was injured in the incident however, the houses were damaged severely.

Officials state that mud along with a large stone rolled down the hill at approximately 2am on Sunday, which alert the residents as some trees fell along the route. Few houses located near the hill were damaged due the incident. No casualties were reported, said the disaster management team.

Rescue teams were informed about the same and the officials rushed to the spot. Process to shift the residents to a safer location began immediately and as of now, many residents have been moved to a municipal school run by the Thane civic body.

Senior official from the Disaster Management Team, Santosh Kadam, spoke to the Hindustan Times and said, “We have made residents vacate the six houses that were damaged. There was no casualty and no injuries in the incident. We have shifted around 22 to 25 families to a municipal school at Gholai Nagar.”

Several such incident were reported this year due to the torrential rainfall in Mumbai. In July 2021, two walls collapsed in Chembur and Vikhroli area killing more than 30 people and leaving several injured.

Multiple incidents of landslides were also reported in Western Maharashtra causing several deaths. Understanding the need for a solution, the state government drafted a plan to relocate the citizens living near the hills to safer places.  On the other hand, landslide and floods in the coastal regions on Maharashtra affected many citizens, their farms and trade. CM Uddhav Thackeray, LoP Devendra Fadnavis and other leaders from the government paid a visit to these regions to understand the damage caused.

The government also promised to support the farmers in this tough time. Policy is being drafted by the government to manage the flooding and water-related issues in these districts.
