State to provide 14.23 million tap connections in the rural Maharashtra by 2024

As per reports, the state government aims to provide water to all parts of the rural areas whereby reports state the target is to set up over 1.42 crore connections, of which 65 per cent work has been completed by August 31, 2021.

The state government of Maharashtra, over the last few months, has been working towards improving water supply across all rural areas and with an aim to implement the same, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, in a meeting held with the Jal Jeevan Mission, on Thursday, September 2, 2021, emphasised about the the need for an action plan which can be considered to expedite the project work.

As per reports, the government aims to provide over 1.4 crore tap water connections to households in rural Maharashtra areas by 2024. The mission is working on a central scheme whereby 65 per cent of the project target has been completed and the remaining will be completed soon. 

The statement from the CMO published in the Hindustan Times read, "The objective under Jal Jeevan Mission is to provide over 14.23 million tap connections in the rural areas of the state by the year 2024. Though this goal is big, this work is virtuous and we have to do it. To achieve this goal of connecting pipes by 2024, a time bound programme should be drawn up and implemented by all agencies on war-footing."

The action plan ordered by the CM will help the officials plan the future work efficiently and ensure the work is not affected due to inadequate funding. Officials from the concerned department have been instructed to offer financial assistance for the same, on a timely basis.

The project has received a total funding of over INR 14,000 crore, of which more than INR 7000 crore has been given by the central government and the other half is from the state government funding. Sharing more instructions, CM Thackeray asked the department to ensure enough manpower is hired for the mission. The Chief Secretary has been directed to share regular updates and the progress for smooth operations.

Earlier, the government provided more than 37 lakh tap water connections in rural areas, in 2020-2021 and now aims to provide water to all parts of the rural areas whereby reports state  the target is to set up over 1.42 crore connections, of which 65 per cent work has been completed by August 31, 2021. As planned, a total of 13 districts and 131 blocks across 12,839 villages will be covered in this mission of providing 55 litres of water will be supplied for one person instead of 40 litres per person.
