Cats mate more often as compared to dogs, i.e. four times in a year. After which, the cats give birth to 2-5 kittens on average and thus, keeping that in consideration, Shiv Sena Corporator Anil Patankar demanded sterilisation of stray cats in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the municipal corporation has allotted ₹1 crore for the programme which will consist of taking the cats under BMC's supervision, sterilising them and later releasing them safely.
