As Maharashtra continues to report a surge in coronavirus cases, the state on Sunday, April 4, recorded the highest ever single-day spike since the start of the pandemic last year.

According to the state health department data, Maharashtra reported 57,074 coronavirus positive cases while 222 patients succumbed to the infection.

The active number of COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 4,30,503. With the 222 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll has mounted to 55,878. As many as 25,22,823 people have recovered from the disease so far.

The recovery rate in Maharashtra is 83.8 per cent while the case fatality rate is 1.86 per cent.

The overall tally of cases in Maharashtra now stands at 30,10,597 while the death toll is 55,878, it said.

A day earlier, that is on April 3, Maharashtra added 49,447 new cases. So far last year, the highest number of cases recorded in a single was 24,619 on September 17, 2020.

Meanwhile, Mumbai city registered 11,163 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, April 4, taking the total infections to 4,52,445. The cumulative recoveries reached 3,71,628 with 5,263 fresh discharges.

The city's COVID-19 death toll mounted to 11,776 after 25 new deaths. At present, the active cases now stand at 68,052.

Besides, if the cases of Mumbai city and satellite towns are combined, the Mumbai division saw 19,942 fresh cases and 45 deaths, taking the tally to 9,55,313 and the toll to 20,623.

The Maharashtra government announced a strict weekend lockdown from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am, adding that essential services and transportation including buses, trains and taxis will be allowed. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting in view of surging COVID-19 cases.

Moreover, the Pune division reported 13,977 new infections, including 6,321 cases in Pune city and 3,307 cases in the twin city of Pimpri Chinchwad, the department said.

Nashik division added 7,666 cases in the day, including 2,150 cases in Nashik city, followed by 6,304 cases in Nagpur division (with 3,111 new cases in Nagpur city).
