In the most awaited matter, Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declared its verdict on central government’s Aadhaar card scheme and regarded it as constitutionally valid.

However, the apex court announced that Aadhaar card is not mandatory for opening bank accounts, mobile connections, and for taking admission in schools/colleges.

No person can be denied government benefits due to the absence of Aadhaar Card. However, it is mandatory for PAN linking and Income Tax return,” declared Supreme Court of India.

This decision comes after hearing several petitions challenging the Aadhaar card scheme legality. The petition was heard by a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

SC, in its decision, struck down Section 57 of Aadhaar Act which allowed the private institutions to use Aadhaar data and its information. This move will protect the personal information of an individual under Right to Privacy. The matter was being heard in SC from January 2018 until on May 10, the verdict by reserved by the bench.
