On Wednesday, January 12, the Maharashtra cabinet cleared a proposal to accord a 100 per cent road tax exemption to all the motors that are utilized as school buses in the state, reports stated.

According to reports, the said waiver will be applicable for a two year period from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022. The state government remarked that the said exemption will be applicable to only those buses owned by schools or taken on lease by schools and thus exclusively operate as school buses.

Based on accounts, a senior transport officer remarked that tax waiver is currently nearly INR 8.5 crore for school buses across the state. The official said that since schools were non-operations during the coronavirus pandemic, they believed that certain tax relief must be given to the affected transporters.

Anil Garg, School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) president was quoted by narratives elaborating on how many bus operators were asking for compensation in the period lost owing to the imposition of the lockdown that caused the school bus trade to halt since March 2020.

He added that owners went through a tough time of having zero income and their staff were rendered jobless. Further, he elucidated that the SBOA welcomed the said decision. Accounts claim that the said waiver will benefit 8,000 buses in Mumbai and 44,000 throughout the state.
