The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is planning on clearing 10 hectares of mangrove forest in the Thane district, reports stated. It will be done in order to construct Balkum to Gaimukh DP Road that is said to be an NH-3 connector.

The TMC will be implementing this project which is also called as ' Ghodbunder Bypass.' The municipal corporation said that it will help in resolving traffic issues. The proposal for the same is sent to the Union Environment Ministry for forest clearance.

According to the proposal, DP Road will start at Kharegaon Toll Naka on Mumbai-Nashik Highway (NH-3). It will end at Ghodbunder Road (SH-42) near Gaimukh. The project will require a total of 10.0377 hectares of mangroves forest land and 40.9232 hectares of non-forest land.

The project is taken up by the TMC  as part of its mission to unblock heavy traffic entering the city, especially on Ghodbunder Road. The proposal sent to the ministry says that to construct the Balkum to Gaimukh DP Road, they will have to cut mangroves in a few patches.

As per the executive engineer at the Public Works Department (PWD), TMC has stated that they have applied for the diversion of 10.0377 hectares of mangrove forest land as there is no other alternative.
