Earlier, girls of standard VII-X had access to sanitary napkins vending machines but now, it will be made available for free for girls of standard V-VI. On Friday, Shiv Sena leader Vishakha Raut raised this proposal in the standing committee meeting which was approved by the chairman.

With this move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) aims to attract a higher number of girl students to the BMC schools. It has been observed that because of several hygiene issues, non-availability of sanitary napkins, the drop out rate of girl students has increased.

In 2016, the civic body’s education department introduced free sanitary napkins and disposable bags through vending machines to girl students. 

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Idzes Kundan said, girls who undergo menstruation will be given eight pads per month. Along with this, in the first phase, the sanitary napkins and disposable pouches vending machines will be installed in 25 schools.
