The first phase of the Surya Regional Water Supply Project, which will provide additional water to Vasai-Virar, was completed in June itself. Yet no water has been supplied to Vasai-Virarkar from this project. Against this backdrop, Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party workers took out a march on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) headquarters on Monday.

Meanwhile, MMRDA officials assured the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party delegation that some of the works in the first phase are still remaining and water supply will be provided to Vasai-Virar from October in the first phase.

MMRDA has taken up the Surya Regional Water Supply Project to solve the problem of water scarcity in the Vasai-Virar and Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation areas. MMRDA through contractor L&T started the work of this project in 2017 at a cost of around INR 1977.29 crore. After the completion of this project, 185 million liters per day will be supplied to the Vasai-Virar area and 218 million liters per day to Mira-Bhayander.

MMRDA has decided to conduct the first phase inauguration by the hands of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. They are also asking for time for this. But there is a discussion that water supply has not been started as the first phase public offering option as the Chief Minister is not getting time yet. Against this backdrop, a march was taken out on Monday at the MMRDA headquarters in Bandra under the leadership of Thackeray Group MLA Sunil Shinde.

On this occasion, the delegation met Additional Commissioner 2 Ashwin Mudgal and demanded to implement the first phase at the earliest. Meanwhile, some works of the first phase are left. Sunil Shinde informed that Mudgal assured the delegation that after completion of these works water will be supplied till Navratri festival. Shinde also warned that if MMRDA does not fulfill this promise, they will come down to the streets again and protest.
