In Mumbai, the prices of almost all vegetables except onions and potatoes have skyrocketed. Declining production due to erratic rains, increase in fuel prices and demand due to the approaching festivities have pushed up the prices of vegetables, highlighted reports.

Tomatoes that were sold at Rs 20/kg a few days ago have now reached Rs 45/kg. Cluster bean which was sold at Rs 40 is now being sold at Rs 100/kg. Reports claim that prices of vegetables have gone up by Rs 20-30/kg.

APMC’s vegetable market in Vashi saw a drop in arrivals on Tuesday. Instead of about 600 carts a day, 484 carts of vegetables had arrived in the market, mentioned accounts. The prices of vegetables which used to be Rs 10-20/kg is now Rs 20-30/kg.

  • Bitter Gourd: Rs 60
  • Ridged gourd: Rs 35
  • Okra: Rs 60
  • Cluster Bean: Rs 60
  • Green chillies: Rs 60
  • Eggplant: Rs 40
  • Capsicum: Rs 40
  • French Bean: Rs 60
  • Potatoes: Rs 35
  • Fenugreek: Rs 40 a bunch
  • Cilantro: Rs 40 a bunch
  • Onion leaves: Rs 40 a bunch
  • Dill: Rs 35-40 a bunch
  • Spinach: Rs 35 a bunch

Due to the increase in prices in the wholesale market, all these vegetables are being sold in the retail market at double or triple the price, stated narratives. Some are even attributing the rise in fuel prices to the hike in the cost of vegetables.

Vegetable prices are also rising in Mumbai and Pune. Prices of vegetables/kg in Pune, based on reports:

  • Cilantro: Rs. 25 to 30
  • Fenugreek: Rs. 25 to 30
  • Cluster Bean: Rs 100 to Rs 120
  • Eggplant: Rs 60 to Rs 70
  • Peas: Rs 140 to Rs 160
  • French Beans: Rs 80 to Rs 100
  • Okra: Rs 70 to 80
  • Red Kidney Bean: 80 to 100 rupees.
  • Flowers: Rs.100 to Rs.120
