The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is building a state-of-the-art laboratory where humans will be tested for animal-borne diseases along with this, the civic body is also building a hospital for the animals.

Animals can cause over 300 diseases

Generally, a man gets affected by more than 300 animal-related diseases due to low-quality meat, low-quality animal products, and animal excretion. These include diseases like leptospirosis, rabies, anthrax, swine flu, and bird flu. Animal-related diseases which can affect human beings are called 'Zoonotic Diseases'.

According to the 19th animal census which was carried out in 2012, there are 40,598 domestic animals in the city. This number is increasing with increasing urbanisation and increasing population. In addition, there is also a large number of wandering animals.

The clinic which is meant for animals in Khar is used by civic vets as well as private vets. But when it comes to infectious diseases, the civic body does not have a proper facility. And so, the civic body planned to bring in animal’s hospital.
