A portion of the Eastern Express Highway near Kopari experienced a lengthy traffic jam after 20 tons of tomatoes fell off a truck at around 2 AM on Friday. The driver of the truck reportedly lost control due to the heavy rain in the area, resulting in the truck overturning.

The scattered tomatoes were later picked up by an earthmover and dumped on the side of the road. Officials at the site carried out the work even as the rain persisted. Several citizens gathered at the spot to witness the cleanup process.

A video shared on Twitter by ANI shows the workers moving the tomatoes to the side of the road. At least one person was injured in this accident.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said that the injured person has been shifted to a hospital. Given that the Eastern Express Highway is one of the busiest roads in the region, motorists were frustrated with the hold-up.

Meanwhile, one user on social media drew comparisons with the ‘La Tomatina’ festival that is conducted annually in Spain’s Buñol region. Another touched on the possibility of the truck carrying more tomatoes than allowed leading to the accident.

Several areas of Mumbai witnessed waterlogging on Friday following heavy rains on Thursday. Rain spells continued throughout Friday.
