In the last few days, Mumbai rains have brought a great sense of respite to the locals. Heavy rains were also recorded in the catchment areas; therefore, the city’s water woes were addressed to a certain extent.

Whilst the city hasn’t witnessed heavy rains since the past few days, seven of the water supplying lakes have total storage of 11,19,815 million litres or 77.37%. This is more than double the water supply last year. Although the citizens aren’t as anxious about the water supply, there still persists a 22% deficit in the reservoirs.

The catchment areas, according to reports, have received little rainfall till July 17, therefore, a few days ago there was a water cut. However, due to the subsequent rains, the water storage in the lakes have increased significantly. Even though it hasn’t been raining incessantly, the water level is rising in the lakes since water is seeping in through the soils.

In the course of the next few months, 22% of the deficit needs to be addressed. Last year, a 20% water cut was implemented in August.

Mumbai needs to supply 3800 million litres of water per day. When all the seven lakes are filled, the total water storage is 14,47,363 million litres.
