Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has finally spoken on the Mumbai nightlife issue saying that the project to open shops, malls, and eateries for 24/7 should be implemented in selective areas.

This should be done on an experimental basis, CM Thackeray added. This is the first time that a Chief Minister has shared his thoughts on the nightlife project.

While addressing a press conference, CM Uddhav Thackeray narrated that the 24/7 proposal can be experimented in Mumbai on a selection basis by allowing shops, malls and restaurants to remain open through the night in selected areas.

It wouldn’t be advisable to implement the nightlife proposal across Maharashtra since each city has an independent culture. We can experiment the same in Mumbai on a selective basis. I didn’t like the word ‘nightlife’,” CM Uddhav Thackeray was quoted saying in the Times of India report.

Thackeray was addressing a crime conference in the presence of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta and Director General of Police Subodh Jaiswal, among others.

Once we grant permission, we can examine the situation, understand its impact and address the complaints,” said CM Thackeray.

Extending support to the 24/7 project, senior IPS officers in the press conference said that establishments stay open all the time in major cities across the world.

Earlier on January 16, Aditya Thackeray had said that the shops, malls and restaurants in Mumbai’s non-residential areas will have an option to remain open 24/7 from January 26.

However, Thackeray mentioned that it will not be made compulsory, adding that this step will provide more revenue to the state government and generate employment.

Shiv Sena MLA Aditya Thackeray has been advocating for the shops to be open overnight in Mumbai since inception.

Earlier, the Maharashtra Home Minister had objected to the proposal raising security concerns. However, Deshmukh later changed his mind and said that it could be done selectively and “not for the entire city”.
