According to the latest reports, with the downpour on Tuesday, July 5, Mumbai registered 69.41 per cent (594 mm) of the average July rainfall (855.7 mm). This transpired in just the first five days of July. 

Following a relatively dry spell in June, Mumbai, in the nine hours on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory registered 153.3 mm of rain. This is categorised as very heavy rainfall.

Further, in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, rainfall recorded by the Santacruz observatory recorded 124.2 mm rainfall while the Colaba observatory saw 117.4 mm.

Based on accounts, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded aggregate rainfall for the season at 733 mm. This is 13 mm higher than average. On the other hand, the Colaba conservatory recorded 48 mm of excess rainfall.

It has been reported that in the 36 hours ending on Tuesday, Mumbai and its suburbs attained over 200 mm of rainfall. However, amidst the waterlogging seen, the supply at the seven lakes was also replenished. 

Narratives suggest that rainfall in the catchment areas of the seven lakes caused the stocks to rise by 6 per cent in a week to 15 per cent. Two lakes that attained the maximum rain in the 24-hour period ending 6 am on Tuesday were Vihar and Tulsi at 119 mm and 227 mm respectively.

As of Tuesday, the aggregate water stocks in the seven lakes breached two lakh million litres. Civic officials are reportedly hopeful that the figure will increase in the coming days. 

For those unversed, Mumbai receives water from seven lakes entailing, Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa and Modal Sagar.
