On Thursday, January 13, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced that the Maharashtra government will offer ration cards to sex workers and destitute without emphasizing identity and residential proof, stated reports. 

The department has sought a comprehensive list of destitute and sex workers from several non-governmental organizations as well as the State Aids Control Organisation, claimed accounts.

According to reports, Bhujbal elaborated on how officials issuing new ration cards have been told to not emphasise documents such as identity and residential proofs. Adding that the mentioned section of society should be exempted from furnishing such documents. 

Bhujbal added that those women enrolled with the National Aids Control Organisation and the State Aids Control Organisation should come ahead and fill forms for the issuance of the ration cards.

He further elucidated that the cards will be distributed with the assistance of the concerned organizations, as well as with the help of the women and child welfare department. 

Previously, the Maharashtra government had established a committee to recommend measures on ways to enrol sex workers and the destitute in food subsidy schemes.
