On Monday, October 25, people from the fishing community from Worli Koliwada wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding a design change in the coastal road project. The people are fearing that the work on the coastal road will affect the routes of their boats.

In the letter, they demanded to increase the gap between the two pillars of the bridge. It also mentioned that despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) having promised that the project won't hamper the community's livelihood, the work has now obstructed their boat routes and fishing area at Worli.

For the unversed, civic body is constructing a 10.58-km coastal road from Princess Street Flyover in Marine Drive to Worli end of flyover on the west coast of Mumbai.

The distance between the two pillars is 60 meters, according to the BMC proposal. In the letter, they have demanded the gap to be increased up to 200 meters so it does not hamper their boats' navigation. Nitesh Patil, secretary of Worli Koliwada Nakhawa Matsya Vyavsay Sahakari Society Limited, said that they are urging the civic body to meet and discuss their problems as this can lead to the destruction of their livelihood.

They have also complained that the BMC is still left to clear the anchors and barges, obstructing and damaging their fishing nets. A few weeks ago, fisherfolk had protested against the ongoing work at the coastal road construction site.
