The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest weather bulletin, has predicted widespread rainfall activity in the state of Maharashtra in the last week of September.

While Nagpur has returned to normalcy, the weather department has issued a yellow alert in several districts of Vidarbha as it is likely to receive light to moderate rain over the next three days. These districts include in Nagpur, Wardha, Gondia, Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Bhandara in the region.

The Madhya Maharashtra region is likely to witness heavy rain showers from September 27 to 29. The department has issued a yellow alert for Pune, Nashik, Amravati, and other seven districts. Moreover, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated that there is a possibility of light rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas for a few days.

According to the state government, flooding was caused as intense rainfall of 109 mm lashed Nagpur within a short period of three hours.

Preliminary estimates by the district authorities indicate that at least 10,000 houses and a large number of commercial establishments were affected. Indian Army flood relief columns from Headquarters Uttar Maharashtra & Gujarat Sub Area were requisitioned by the District Collector Nagpur on Sunday morning, September 24. Two columns of Indian Army with Engineer equipment and boats were deployed in the area of Ambazari for flood rescue operations. Indian Army rescued about 40 persons in all age categories and also provided them with medical aid.

Maharashtra government has announced a compensation of INR 10,000 for houses and INR 50,000 for commercial establishments for losses incurred due to the rain. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who toured the flooded areas, also assured help to the people.
