Former Indian Cricket team captain, Ajit Wadekar, passed away at the age of 77. He was suffering from cancer and he breathed his last on Wednesday. Wadekar was one of the most popular names cricket, and under his leadership brought historic victories for India against England and West Indies. He was also honoured with the Arjuna Award Padmashri, in 1967 and 1972 respectively.

Wadekar made his debut in 1966 and became the captain of the Indian cricket team in 1971. He played a total of 37 Tests for India and was an integral part of the team during the first ODI for India in 1974.

He has played along with popular players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Farokh Engineer, Bishen Bedi, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and many others. He retired from international cricket following India’s dismissal from the series, and soon after he chose to retire from all forms of cricket. In the 90s, he also served as the manager of the Indian cricket team during Mohammed Azharuddin’s captainship.

Wadekar was also involved in social work to support the blind. In December 2017, he participated in a match in Mumbai, where he led the Shivaji Park Gymkhana team and played against Dadar union.
