In the debut match of this season’s Indian Premium League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) set a target of 178 to its opponents Delhi Capitals (DC), who chose to field first. However, DC managed to chase the score in the 18th over with a loss of 6 wickets.

DC led by Rishabh Pant also gave a tough fight taking it away from Mumbai. At the end of the match, DC was at 179/6 at 18.2 overs.

Though it was not a good start for the defending champions, MI Skipper Rohit Sharma, while addressing post-match, said that this not the end. "I thought it was a good score. It didn't look like a pitch where you can get 170+ at the start but we played in the middle and finished well. Just didn't bowl according to our plans. We always come prepared whether it's the first game or last game. We want to win every game. Things didn't go according to plan but that can happen. Just need to stay close as a group and take the learnings. Disappointed with the loss but not the end," Sharma shared.

The Capitals' openers Prithvi Shaw and Tim Seifert started well. But, leg spinner Murugan Ashwin’s back to back wickets brought the defending champions back into the game.

Kuldeep Yadav is adjudged as the Player of the Match as he shone against MI in today's match.

In the last over, counter-attack from Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav created more problems for MI. They needed 74 in last 40 balls with just 4 wickets in hands, but Lalit and Axar just destroyed the MI bowling unit.

Though, the most expensive MI player Ishan Kishan of IPL showed his worth as he smashed a breathtaking 81 off 48 balls to propel the home team to reach 177/5.

The match was played at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai.
