On Wednesday, April 13, Mumbai Indians (MI) played against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 23rd match of the IPL 2022 at Pune's MCA Stadium. MI was chasing a target of 199 and received a strong start with youngsters Dewald Brevis and Tilak Verma going strong. However, PBKS managed to beat MI by 12 runs.

Brevis's and Verma's dismissal came in quick succession. On the one hand, Brevis scored a 49, Verma was run out. Similarly, while MI captain Rohit Sharma got to a great start, he was not able to make an impact. Likewise, Ishan Kishan lost his wicket in the next over. With hopes later pinned on Suryakumar Yadav and Keiron Pollard, their knocks were not enough. Even Jaydev Undakat hit a few balls, but it did not help the team secure a win.

In the post match conference, Sharma said, ""At the end of the day you've got to play good cricket, we've not been able to do that."

In the first innings, PBKS scored 198 at the loss of five wickets, with openers Shikhar Dhawan and captain Mayank Agarwal scoring 70 and 52 respectively. On their team, Jitesh Sharma also managed to get 30 without being out. From the MI camp, Basil Thampi took two wickets and Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Undakat and M Ashwin took a wicket each.

Even with MI winning the toss and electing to bowl first, they were unable to get a victory with five games into the league. The team now stands at the bottom of the table.
