Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ousted from the five-match T20I and three-game ODI series in New Zealand, which begins from January 24. The left-hander was ruled out because he has sustained an injury on his left shoulder. He had sustained this injury while playing an ODI at Bangalore against Australia. Mumbai youngster Prithvi Shaw has been named as Dhawan's replacement in the ODI squad whereas Sanju Samson will be taking the southpaw's spot in the T20I series.

There hasn't been much difference in the Indian T20 and ODI squad with the only addition of Kedar Jadhav. All-rounder Washington Sundar, who is part of the T20I squad, hasn't been named for the 50-over format.

Dhawan had suffered the injury to his left shoulder while putting in a dive on the field in the first innings of the ODI series. As a result, while chasing the target, India ended up with a batsman short as he couldn't take the field again. After the match, Dhawan was seen having his left hand strapped in a sling.

An MRI of his shoulder was conducted, and the results have confirmed a grade II injury of his acromio-clavicular joint. His hand will be in a sling and he has been advised rest for some time. He will start his active rehab management in the first week of February at the National Cricket Academy," the BCCI release said.

Unfortunately, Dhawan had just made a comeback in One-Dayers after missing half of 2019 World Cup. Dhawan had played T20s in West Indies and had also featured in the home series against Bangladesh, before suffering a cut to his knee in a Syed Mushtaq Ali fixture that put him out the home series against West Indies that involved three T20Is and three ODIs.

However, the left-hander's form did not falter as he displayed brilliant batting with two fifties in the first two ODIs - consisting of knocks of 74 and 96.
