The 11th edition of Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and it hasn't been the best of starts for Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians. After a home defeat to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opener, MI fell short against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday. Both were close encounters and Mumbai would be bitterly disappointed to miss out on wins but there's an exciting silver lining to this — 20-year-old Mayank Markande.

Born in Bathinda, Punjab, this young lad is debuting this year in the IPL and on his debut, he impressed by bagging 3 wickets and 4 in the second match. After two innings, he's the purple cap holder and has bagged 7 wickets for 46 runs.

In his first game against CSK, wherein he picked up captain MS Dhoni with a beauty and MI captain Rohit Sharma knew he's got a talented bowler on his hands. Markande was not known by Sharma before he stepped in during a nets session and started spinning his talent to the team.

Although Mumbai Indians lost to SRH, Markande made a name for himself with four wickets and received praise from commentary boxes, former cricketers and was trending on social media platforms.

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh went on to tweet in Markande’s praise – a compliment that brought a smile to the 20-year old's face who had the opportunity to share bowling space with him in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The young lad from Punjab didn't start out as a spinner but preferred fast bowling. He has played list A games for Punjab and just a year ago, he was enjoying IPL 10 on a couch in front of a TV along with his mother.

A year later, he's a Mumbai Indians player and the purple cap holder with 7 wickets and people are impressed with his bowling. It remains to be seen how he performs throughout the season but the start has been nothing less than impressive.

Mumbai Indians face Delhi Daredevils at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday, April 14.

Fun Fact: Before the IPL he had around 2000 followers on his Instagram account. Now, it's clocked 38.8k followers.
