The spat over loudspeakers in public places has grabbed the attention of the state over the past few weeks.

Mumbai police, in its survey, found out that nearly 72 per cent of the mosques in Mumbai are keeping their sound very low during their early morning call for prayers (azaan) to comply with the noise pollution rules. While, many mosques in the city have stopped using loudspeakers.

A senior police officer said that mosques have voluntarily stopped using loudspeakers for early morning azaan, as the use of such speakers between 10 pm to 6 am is prohibited by the law.

Police also clarified that some of the aforementioned surveys were conducted before MNS chief Raj Thackeray's speech and some were conducted post his speech.

A senior Mumbai police officer said that people have started sending applications seeking permission to use loudspeakers.

Additionally, the state cyber police have also intensified their vigilance on social media platforms in order to identify those elements who are spreading communal hate messages and rumours.

Reportedly, it began after Thackeray had warned the Maharashtra government that if these loudspeakers were not removed, then MNS workers would play Hanuman Chalisa outside mosques.

Amidst this occurrence, the Maharashtra Home Department issued an order for the utilization of loudspeakers at religious sites. The state has reportedly mentioned that prior permission is required for its use.
