Recently, a video posted online by a man named Shubham Mishra threatened rape against standup comic Agrima Joshua for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Subsequently, Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker shared the video on Twitter with the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

Deshmukh has now asked the State Cyber Cell to verify the video while suggesting Police Chief Parambir Singh to take legal action against Mishra. Following these revelations, Mishra posted another video apologizing for using abusive language, adding that the did not “mean to rape” Joshua and his video only asked for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to be respected.

Mishra’s video came after a year-old video by Joshua surfaced online in which she was seen joking about the Chhatrapati Shivaji statue, while also taking a jibe at PM Narendra Modi. Indian Express claims that Joshua was performing this sketch on April 2019 at a café situated in Khar (West).

As the video went viral over the weekend, some on social media shared details of the café’s employees while a few activists from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are said to have barged into the location and damaged some of the furniture as well as the stage area.

Interestingly, Deshmukh had previously mentioned via Twitter that he has asked the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General to take legal action against Joshua for the insensitive comments made against Shivaji Maharaj. “I urge everyone to maintain calm and law will take its course,” he added. Joshua later apologized and pulled down the video in question.

Threats of rape and/or violence against women are quite common on social media. The vitriol is often directed at women on the opposing side of the political or ideological spectrum. It is commendable, however, that the Home Minister stepped in to direct authorities to take action against the miscreant in this case.

The police had already taken action against Shubham Mishra for the video that he had posted.

Now, Mumbai Police Cyber Crime Branch has tweeted that they have taken "Suo Moto action" against Umesh Dada too. He was arrested by the cybercrime branch from Nalasopara and has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
