A 58-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) who was set to retire in May this year has committed suicide at Chembur Police station. The deceased ASI was posted in the Chembur Police station where he hanged himself.

The dead body of ASI Sampat Dattatray Gawde was found in the storeroom of the police station and a suicide note was also discovered from his shirt pocket.

In the note, the deceased wrote that he is taking the extreme step as he was suffering from cancer, an official informed while adding that the dead body was found hanging on the ceiling at around 11:30 AM on Monday.

“He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A suicide note we found in his shirt pocket stated he was taking this step as he was suffering from cancer,” the official was quoted in media reports as saying.

ASI Gawde is survived by his wife, son and a daughter. The son is working in a private firm while the deceased’s daughter is married off. ASI Gawde was scheduled to retire on May 31.

Knowing his medical history, Gawde was given a posting in the police station’s storeroom which is considered a less taxing job compared to the outdoor activities which constables and officers are assigned.

As this happens, the Chembur police have filed an accidental death report in the case.
