As the city has been lashed with continual rains for a couple of days, a dilapidated balcony of a Chembur house collapsed on Thursday night, inflicting serious injuries on an elderly woman, and eventually killing her.

On Saturday, August 29, the woman succumbed to her injuries during her ongoing treatment. The deceased was identified as Tulsabai Waman, aged 54.

The deceased was living with her two sons, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in the Mahatma Phule Nagar area near the MonoRail station in Chembur. They had built their house as One Plus One.

In an unfortunate accident, around 2:42 pm, a portion of the G+1 structure collapsed suddenly collapsed due to the incessant rainfall. Tulsabai was found under it and was critically injured. She was further rushed to Rajawadi Hospital immediately for treatment.

Upon learning of the incident, the fire brigade rushed to the spot to pick up the wreckage. Rehabilitation work of slums was to be undertaken in the Mahatma Phule Nagar area. The houses were to be demolished on March 15. However, due to coronavirus induced lockdown everywhere, the work that was to be done by the developer was delayed.

The Maharashtra State Government had earlier sent a proposal to fast-track and streamline the redevelopment of dilapidated buildings nestled in the city. Moreover, the State had also approved an amendment to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) redevelopment rules.
