The Baramati Police in Pune has registered an FIR against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Gopichand Padalkar in connection with the remarks he made against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar.

Amar Dhumal, NCP’s office-bearer in party’s Baramati unit, on Thursday registered a complaint against Padalkar for terming Pawar as “corona” that has infected Maharashtra.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) informed that the Police have registered an FIR against the BJP MLC under section 505(2) of the Indian Penal code charging him for promoting enmity, hatred between classes. Dhumal further alleged that Padalkar’s remarks spread rumours, fear and hatred in the society.

Earlier, Padalkar accused Pawar of ignoring the demand for reservation quota for the Dhangar community. Padalkar, who himself hails from the Dhangar community, was speaking at a press conference at Pandharpur in Solapur district.

“Sharad Pawar is coronavirus for Maharashtra. He has been leading the state for several years but has only oppressed people from the backward classes and will continue to do so in the future. I don’t think that he will be positive about the demand of reservation for the Dhangar community,” the BJP MLC asserted.

While registering the complaint, Dhumal said that the remarks made by Padalkar were objectionable, false and sought to create a rift in the community.

Padalkar’s remarks sparked huge outrage in the political circle with NCP leaders slamming the BJP MLC. In order to control the damage, senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis had to jump in saying that opposition against any senior leader should be expressed using appropriate words.

“I had a word with Padalkar and he has admitted that it was an emotional outburst against the NCP chief. I told him that Pawar saheb is our political opponent and not our enemy,” Fadnavis said.
