Darshan Solanki suicide update: Mumbai court extends accused remand till April 15

The police custody of the IIT Bombay student, Arman Khatri, was extended till Saturday, April 15 by a special SC/ST court. On April 9, Khatri was detained in relation to the suicide of his classmate Darshan Solanki. Khatri and Solanki stayed on the same floor of a hostel and both were batchmates.

On February 12 at around 1:00 pm, Darshan jumped from the shelter area of the hostel building of IIT-Bombay. A native of Ahmedabad, he had enrolled for B-Tech in the institute three-and-a-half months ago. Followed by the incident, the probe was handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch Special Investigation Team (SIT). 

Meanwhile, the student's family alleged that Darshan Solanki faced caste discrimination, due to which he took this drastic step. A senior Mumbai Police officer said, 'The investigation has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch. An SIT has been constituted under the leadership of Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Lakhmi Gautam. DCP (Detection) KK Upadhyay and ACP (Santacruz Division) Chandrakant Bhosale with more members to be added later.

The special investigation team (SIT) of Mumbai crime branch recovered a ‘suicide note’ from Darshan Solanki’s hostel room who committed suicide on February 12. A first year B. Tech student from IIT-B, Solanki wrote in his note just four words ‘Arman has killed me’. The Arman referred to in the note is believed to be a reference to his classmate Arman Iqbal Khatri.


Sources informed that Armaan threatened Solanki with a knife out of anger over his religious comment. Solanki was scared. Preliminary investigations have revealed that he had also apologised to Khatri. Meanwhile, sources said that Armaan will search for the cutter that he used to threaten him and record the statements of some persons.
