The Azad Maidan police on Saturday arrested two people for assaulting a doctor at Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The two offenders were related to the patient admitted in the hospital.

The accused were identified as - Himanshu Bhurke, 32, and Ashitosh Jhore, 23. Both the accused were sent into two days police custody by the court.

Earlier, a similar incident occurred at KEM hospital where doctors were beaten up and this has raised questions over the security of the doctors working at government hospitals. In reaction to these incidents, the resident doctors went on a strike all across Maharashtra. After that, there was an increase in the security of the doctors at government hospitals. However, despite that, the doctors were manhandled at GT hospital.

Dr. Vishvajeet Wakde, on Saturday morning, was attending to patients in the emergency ward and a patient named Hitendra Bhurke, 28, entered the ward as he was not feeling well. The doctor asked him about his condition and refrained his brother to give him water as it could’ve worsened the patient’s condition. As this happened, Hitendra’s relative assaulted the doctor.

A complaint was registered at Azad Maidan police station against the assaulters and they were booked and will be prosecuted under section 353, 332, 323, 506, and 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
