On Monday night, a vacant building collapsed on a nearby residential building in Bandra West, Mumbai.

According to reports, two people were injured in the accident whereas some are believed to be trapped under the pile. After receiving information about the incident, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot, the rescue work is said to be underway.

Officials from the H-west ward stated that around 50 labourers, eight fire engines, two JCBs are involved in search and rescue operation.

Moreover, the disaster management cell of the BMC stated that a vacant old building which was known as the Kalpana building collapsed on the four-storey Hardik Villa residential building on Sherley Rajan Road near Rizvi College in Bandra west. The collapse damaged the compound wall and ground floor of Hardik Villa and cars parked on the nearby roadside. After the incident, Hardik Vill has been vacated.

While several people have died due to the collapsible, deformed structures of the buildings in the city, the Maharashtra State Government had earlier sent a proposal to fast-track and streamline the redevelopment of dilapidated buildings in Mumbai.

With several residents depending on these buildings for shelter, the fast-tracking of redevelopment projects can be touted to provide some relief to them. Providing clarity on the 3-year deadline period for completion, it is said that the clock will start ticking the moment MHADA obtains the commencement certificate.
