Fair Play Betting App Case: ED seizes INR 344 crore assets

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has so far attached assets worth INR 344 crore in the Fair Play Betting App case. The ED is investigating the illegal telecasting of IPL cricket matches.  It is also alleged that betting on the result of 2024 Lok Sabha elections was also done through the Fair Play app along with IPL broadcast. 


The Maharashtra Cyber Department had filed a case against Fair Play App along with other accused for copyright infringement. The complainant Viacom 18 Network Company had the broadcasting rights of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. But the Fair Play app has been accused of illegally broadcasting the matches. ED is investigating the matter.


Viacom 18 Company holds the broadcasting rights of IPL matches. But the normal ones were illegally broadcasted on the Fair Play app. This time around 40 film actors promoted this app. Viacom 18 had complained to the Maharashtra Cyber Police about the violation of digital property rights.

As a result, it is alleged that the complainant company suffered a loss of more than INR 100 cr. Maharashtra Cyber had filed a case against Fair Play App for copyright infringement. On the basis of that case, ED also started an investigation.


ED's investigation has revealed that Fair Play has entered into contracts with Indian firms representing celebrities through foreign entities in Dubai and Curacao. Also Indian institutions, companies have not taken any due care before implementing the agreement to promote fair play.


ED investigations have revealed that Fair Play collected funds through bank accounts opened through various forged documents. Also transactions were done online using fake bank account amounts. Receipts of pharmaceutical companies were used for that. The funds have been channeled to foreign fake companies based in Hong Kong, China and Dubai. More than 400 bank accounts were used for that.

According to the ED investigation, May Befi Finserv Pvt Ltd and May True Fund Innovation India Pvt Ltd provided illegal payout services to Fair Play users. Funds were collected from users of Fair Play, manipulated and distributed using fake bank accounts and intermediary bank accounts. The funds were then transferred to the bank accounts of May True Fund Innovation India Pvt Ltd and May Befi Finserv Pvt Ltd. It was used to illegally provide payouts to Fair Play users. The said companies received commission for these illegal services, which the directors used to purchase immovable properties in the name of themselves and related persons/entities.


Last year, the ED conducted a search operation on June 12, September 27 and October 25. Various assets were seized/frozen in this. On January 15, ED had attached property worth 8 crore 37 lakh rupees in this case. Therefore, the ED informed that the value of the property brought in this case is 344 crores 15 lakhs rupees. Further investigation is going on in this matter.
