Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, a nationwide lockdown is in place. Since no vaccine has been discovered as of now for the novel virus, social distancing seems the only plausible way to break the chain of spread. However, despite repeatedly asking people to stay at home, there are some miscreants who have been flouting lockdown regulations.

Taking action against such defaulters, Mumbai Police has registered close to 10,400 cases for alleged violation of prohibitory orders during the lockdown. A Mumbai Police official informed that as many as 5,456 offences were registered in the city in this connection.

"With an aim to contain the spread of coronavirus, police have been taking action under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and other relevant sections since March 22," the official said.

Mumbai is the worst-affected city in India with 6,644 cases of coronavirus being recorded so far. And so it becomes essential for the city's police to ensure lockdown regulations are followed stringently. Among the 10,408 people booked for flouting the regulations, 6,513 people were arrested and later released on bail. Whereas 2,661 were allowed to go after notices were served to them, whereas 1,234 persons are absconding. Meanwhile, as many as 1,812 were booked for not wearing masks while stepping out of their homes.

Of the total number of cases, 3,646 were registered for unlawful assembly at public places. Most of these cases were in Central Mumbai, the official added.

The police personnel in Mumbai have been putting their lives at risk every day by patrolling the streets of the city to ensure that the lockdown is being effectively followed. So far, three Mumbai Police constables have succumbed after testing positive for COVID-19.
