In a shocking incident that has come to light, a 19-year-old girl from Aurangabad was gang-raped in Chembur. The incident took place on July 7 when the girl had come to Mumbai to celebrate her birthday. While she was returning home, 4 strangers approached her and started torturing her.

The girl was later drugged and raped. After she regained her consciousness, she did not tell anybody about the incident and left for Aurangabad. Gradually her health started taking a toll as she started skipping her meals. Her parents admitted her to a hospital where they came to know that she was sexually assaulted. 

Her parents filed a complaint in Jalgaon district near Aurangabad but they rejected it as the complaint should be filed near the location where the crime took place. Chunabhatti Police station has registered a zero First Information Report (FIR) case against 4 unidentified accused and the investigation is underway. 

Crime cases against women have experienced a spike in the city. According to data released by Praja Foundation which is a compilation of many RTI queries, there have been over 432 cases of rape registered between 2013-14 whereas there were 792 cases registered between 2017-19. 1209 and 2358 cases have been registered for molestation in the year 2013-14 and 2017-19 respectively. The maximum number of rape cases have been registered in South Mumbai and since 2013 there has been an increase by over 172 per cent, whereas, suburbs have experienced a rise by over 186 per cent in molestation cases in 5 years.
