Over the last few days, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned several police officers from the Maharashtra government with regards to the probe against former state home minister Anil Deshmukh, and this has irked the government. Reacting to the same, the authorities have taken to the Bombay High Court stating that the CBI is demoralizing the police force of Maharashtra, and this is being done despite the case pending in the court.

Sharing more details, Darius Khambatta, the senior counsel representing Maharashtra government informed the court that summons are continuously being issued, basis which protection is being sought to ensure no coercive action is taken. The matter was heard by Justice Nitin M Jamdar and Justice Sarang V Kotwal based on the petition filed which stated that summons issued to state Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte and Director General of Police Sanjay Pandey.

As of now, the hearing has been scheduled for November 17, 2021, until which fresh summons cannot be issued. Moreover, the bench refused to get into the merits of the case currently.

A report published recently in the Indian Express states that a total of two summons were issued on October 18 and 19, 2021, by the CBI, which has decided to take action now and has not been to file a reply on time. Adding to this, Khambatta said that the summons have been sent to both the dignitaries who were not concerned at the time of the case, and threats were issued if they did not attend despite being summoned.

No comments were made by Additional Solicitor General Aman Lekhi who has been representing CBI in this matter. She further assured that fresh summons will only be issued as ordered by the court, i.e., after the date of hearing.
