Mumbai 2nd among metro cities in crimes against women; Maharashtra also witness a rise in crimes

According to a report released by the National Crime Record Bureau’s (NCRB) Crime in India 2020, Mumbai ranks second to Delhi among 19 metropolitan cities in crimes against women.

This indicates that even in the pandemic, the city witnessed a high number of instances of crimes against women as the city reported 4,583 cases, while the National Capital recorded 9,782 instances.

Mumbai recorded the highest instances of stalking and human trafficking among all cities.

While Delhi topped in several categories of crimes registered, including assault on women, rape and even sexual harassment while Mumbai being second with 4,229 cases. 

Crime rate is calculated per lakh of population. In cases of cybercrime-related to women, Mumbai with 58 cases ranked third, coming after Bengaluru which recorded 63 cases last year.

However, the statistics also showed that Mumbai saw only a marginal drop in registered crimes in 2020, ranking fifth among 19 metropolitan cities.

Besides, among states and UTs, the maximum rape cases were lodged in Rajasthan in 2020 with 5,310 registered, followed by Uttar Pradesh (2,769), Madhya Pradesh (2,339), Maharashtra (2,061) and Assam (1,657). Delhi logged 997 such cases during the year. 

Moreover, a maximum of 3,779 murder cases was filed in UP followed by Bihar (3,150), Maharashtra (2,163).

The report also revealed that Maharashtra saw a rise in crimes over the last three years. The state recorded 3,94,017 cases in 2020, a rise of 47,726 from 2018, which reported 3,46,291 cases.

India reported an average of 77 rape cases and 80 murders daily in 2020, according to the NCRB data.

Meanwhile, India recorded 50,035 cases of cybercrime in 2020, with an 11.8 per cent surge in such offences over the previous year.

Against the backdrop of the Sakinaka rape and murder incident, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale has given new orders to strengthen the safety of women in the city. 

Accordingly, on Tuesday, September 14, the Mumbai Police announced the formation of 'Nirbhaya Squad' for women safety.
