A woman called a phone number available on the internet to solve a set top box research problem. The person she spoke to then made the woman download a remote access app on her phone. Through that, the cyber criminal withdrew INR 81,000 from her bank account.

According to the police, the 47-year-old female complainant, a resident of Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli East, recharged the set-top box on March 5. For that she paid INR.931. But the woman did not see the deposit, nor did she receive any message about it. She then waited for a day and decided to call customer care the next day. For that she searched the number on the internet.

The woman found a helpline number on the internet. She called that number. But she could not get in touch with the customer care staff. Then she hung up the phone. After some time she got a call from an unknown number and the person said that he was speaking from the customer care.

Fraud through remote access applications

The lady mentioned her problem to the fraud customer care employee. He then asked her to download a remote access application on the phone. She followed every instruction he gave. After that she got an OTP. The person on the other side asked her for OTP. She gave him the OTP without any hesitation. A few seconds later, she received a message that the money had been debited from her bank account.

After receiving a message that money was deducted from the bank account, the woman realised that she had been cheated. Then she ran to the police. The woman filed a complaint at the police station on Tuesday.
