Mumbai's suburban local train, which is also known as the lifeline of Mumbai, has over 8 million commuters who travel daily. RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh had asked Government Railway Police (GRP) about the cases of theft in the last six years. Responding to the RTI, the police said that in the last six years, a total of 3168 cases related to crime have been registered in suburban railway and in six years, goods worth staggering ₹6,96,47,767 have been stolen from railways.

RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh had sought information from the railway police from the year 2013 to 2018.
According to the information, a total of 3168 incidents of robbery and burglary were recorded from January 1, 2013 to December 2018. In six years, money worth ₹6,96,47,767 was stolen. However, the police recovered goods worth ₹3,64,68,542 which accounts to 50 per cent of theft.
