A 26-year-old woman from Ambernath in Thane district allegedly died by suicide 48 days after her wedding. Police have registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law following allegations of mental and physical harassment.
The deceased was identified as Vishakha Tilkar. She married Nitin Tilkar on April 30 this year. According to her family, the marriage soon turned troubled. They alleged that Vishakha was subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws after the wedding.
Family members said that the accused were unhappy with the gifts and respect they received during the wedding ceremony. They said that Vishakha was asked to bring money and jewellery from her parents' home. These demands continued after the marriage and led to frequent harassment.
The family also alleged that Nitin Tilkar installed CCTV cameras both inside and outside the couple's home in Ambernath. They claimed the cameras were used to monitor Vishakha's movements at all times. According to relatives, this left her with little privacy and isolated her from others.
They further alleged that Vishakha was not allowed to interact freely with neighbours. Family members said arguments and physical assaults would follow if she spoke to people around her. They claimed that two days before her death, she was beaten after speaking with a female neighbour.
According to the family, Vishakha had informed her mother about the difficulties she was facing at her marital home. After learning about her situation, her parents had decided to bring her back to their home. But before that, Vishakha had died by suicide by hanging herself.
Following the incident, a case was registered at Shivajinagar Police Station in Ambernath against Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar and his brother Ninad Tilkar. Police said the accused have been booked for mental and physical harassment as well as for allegedly abetting suicide. As per reports, Nitin Tilkar has been arrested.
