Dr. Kafeel Khan, a paediatrician from Gorakhpur, was arrested on Wednesday, January 30, by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Special Task Force (STF) at the Mumbai Airport. The arrest comes after he allegedly made 'inflammatory' statements in December, at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus during a protest against the Citizenship Amendments Act (CAA).

Khan had arrived in Mumbai to attend an anti-CAA protest and was arrested by UP STF with assistance from Mumbai Police.

“Officials of the UP STF arrested Dr Kafeel Khan in a case which was registered at Civil Lines Police Station under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) of IPC. Our police team helped our UP counterparts on their request,” a Mumbai Police official told PTI.

The officer added that Khan had made those statements on December 12 during a protest against CAA at the Bab e Syed Gate outside the AMU, and further alleged that the doctor had made “objectionable comments” against Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.

After the alleged incident took place, Aligarh Police had stormed the University and reportedly attacked students who were protesting against the Act. According to a report, it was also learned that the police had attacked the students while chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and using Islamophobic slurs.

The FIR against Khan states that social activist and Swaraj India President, Yogendra Yadav was also present during the speech at AMU. According to PTI, after his arrest, Khan was taken to the Sahar Police Station and now, he will be taken to UP on a transit remand, once the formalities are completed.

Dr, Kafeel Khan, a paediatrician, was suspended from the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in 2017 following the untimely death of over 60 children in less than a week. Later he was arrested and jailed for the same. He had alleged that the Yogi Adityanath government had implicated him in the case. In September 2019, Khan was cleared of all charges and has demanded full reinstatement.
