According to the data shared by the state education department, the number of students attending schools has witnessed a 60 per cent increase three weeks after the Maharashtra education department resumed classes for 9 to 12 standard in several parts of the state.

As per the data, on December 14, nearly 8 lakh students were attending schools every day while more than 15,000 schools have reopened over the past three weeks. Earlier on November 23, the education department reopened more than 9,000 schools in various parts of the state such as Chandrapur, Solapur, Satara, Beed and Amravati.

The state government had earlier decided to reopen schools from November 23, 2020, after eight long months, however, schools in Mumbai, Pune City, Aurangabad City, Nashik, Pimpri Chinchwad is to remain closed for now. Although schools remain closed in the cities, in the rural areas of Pune, Aurangabad, as well as in Latur, Osmanabad, schools have reopened.

In the past, on November 20, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal informed that schools in Mumbai are to remain closed till December 31, 2020. This development came days after the Delhi government announced all schools to remain shut in view of the COVID-19 situation. However, schools in other parts of Maharashtra reopened on November 23, as directed by the state government.

According to the previous notice, the students were to attend school on alternate days in order to ensure a 50 per cent attendance. In addition, the guidelines stated that a regular school day will span not more than four hours. However, no lunch break is to be provided to the students.
