Since the last few months, Mumbai University has been criticised for their postponing of examinations and results of various streams. However, now the university has been lashed for the miserable state of the Kalina campus. A month ago, the mess for students suddenly shut down leaving the students helpless. Apart from this, the requests made by the students residing in the international hostel have been overlooked by the authorities over and over again.

In a recent event, two blocks of the international student hostel, situated in Kalina University fell during the wee hours of Wednesday. Fortunately, no one was injured. However, after the incident, the students went ahead and complained to the authorities about the incident. But neither did they pay heed to the complaints nor did they conduct an investigation about the incident.

The condition of the international hostel has been deteriorating and even though the building is really old, there have been no maintenance steps.

While the problem of the building has been persistent, the students are struggling to get even the basic facilities. However, as the students are foreigners, their issues are left unheard due to the language barrier.

Regardless of communication gaps, some students tried establishing a dialogue with the authorities by writing letters. As a temporary provision, the University administration did some work to install the mesh and cloth in some places. But on Wednesday, the block on the ninth floor collapsed which has raised questions about the safety of the students.

Apart from this, pieces of PoP from the building are continuously falling in this hostel and the debris of broken pieces of PoP, broken pipes have been found everywhere. Further, the rooms are drenched during the monsoons due to major leakage issues. The beds, cupboards are also not in a decent condition and hostel WiFi facilities have been disconnected for the last one year. Keeping these concerns in mind, the students have now accused the officials of ignoring the complaints.

Rather than arranging for temporary solutions, it is high time that the University officials solve the issue on a permanent basis. The authorities must also ensure cleanliness in the campus," Soumit Salunkhe, a law student told Mumbai Live.

When Mumbai Live approached the warden, he shrugged off the responsibilities saying that the warden appointed before him did not do anything. He had arranged for temporary residence and temporary nets for the students. The warden further said that this is the job of engineers, so instead of him, the engineers should be interrogated about the incident.
