Well as students pass out of school and go to college they tend to enjoy the tenure by bunking classes and chilling with their friends on spots like Marine Drive, Bandstand, and many times in the college canteen, or the serious ones miss out on college lectures as they are preparing for entrance exams. This leads to an increase in absenteeism.

The Directorate Of Secondary & Upper Secondary Education will begin inspecting all junior colleges in the state in response to worries about the low attendance at junior colleges and in accordance with prior state government orders.

Junior college students who are preparing themselves to clear entrance exams of IITs, medical school, and other career options will have to face the music of attendance management. The Director Of Secondary & Upper Secondary Education has ordered a close examination of junior college attendance rates, with a focus on cases of substantial absences from class. In Pune, the inspection campaign has already started.

The cases of students missing out on college classes and attending coaching classes, preparing for entrance exams, or casually bunking have been a subject of debate for quite a long time. In an effort to motivate students to concentrate on their Class 12 exams, the education department tried to reinstate the importance of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam scores for engineering admissions during the 2014–2015 academic year. However, many junior colleges continue to see consistent irregular attendance.

After clearing HSC, students opt to take admissions in professional courses for which they need to crack the entrance exams, and they get admissions only based on their performance in entrance tests, like JEE, NEET, and CET. The marks obtained in HSC board exams hold very little importance in securing admissions.

As a result, kids and parents frequently underrate junior colleges in favor of coaching programs that are specifically designed to help children prepare for these admission tests. This strategy frequently results in students being unable to get seats in many private classes.

"For many students, getting into a junior college is just a formality. Without frequently attending junior college, they score good grades in HSC exams. All year long, they only use coaching classes. Many choose integrated junior college courses that combine HSC coursework with preparation for entrance tests. Not only in self-financed or unaided colleges but also in junior colleges with assistance. As a result, fewer students are attending numerous junior colleges. Mumbai should soon begin these checks, following Pune's example," said a junior college administrator from Mumbai. The education department intends to use expert teams to undertake unannounced inspections and to monitor the issue closely.

In the recent Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Assembly, issues regarding recent collaboration between private coaching classes and junior colleges were raised by the ministers. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave assurance that the school education department would address the issue of low or less attendance of students in junior colleges. However, on the matter, till now there has been no official order issued by the government.

Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Maharashtra, Sampat Suryavanshi, said, “Government requirements must be followed by all junior colleges. While the requirement of 75% attendance is strictly adhered to at degree-granting institutions, complaints regarding insufficient attendance in numerous junior colleges have appeared. Inspections will be carried out in junior colleges in response to these issues.”
