The state government on Monday declared that from the academic year 2020-21, Marathi language will be a compulsory subject for all primary students, i.e. Class 1-6. The decision comes after a meeting where State Marathi Language Minister Subhash Desai and Education Minister Varshan Gaikwad on Monday, reviewed the progress about making Marathi language a compulsory subject.

The meeting was attended virtually by senior officials of the School Education Department, Marathi Language Department, Balbharti, and the chairman of the Minorities Commission along with Desai and Gaikwad.

Desai asked the officials to prepare the class-wise syllabus of the Marathi language, textbooks and training materials for the Class 1-6 before the next academic session commences. He also instructed the School Education Department to issue a notification about the mandate of the new law regarding compulsory teaching of the Marathi subject in all schools across Maharashtra.

The law making Marathi language as a compulsory subject was unanimously passed by both the Houses of the Legislature in the last Budget session. After the law was passed, Gaikwad and Desai had assured that the implementation of the law will begin from the upcoming academic year (2020-21). Education Minister Gaikwad stated that they had conducted the meeting to enforce the law and set up a task force to chalk out the regulations.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the academic year for school students witnessed an early end. Alongside, the college students in First Year and Second-Year received respite from the examinations as the State Minister of Higher Education, Uday Samant announced the cancellation of exams. However, the Third-Year students were displeased with the decision as they had been asked to appear for exams in July. While the final year exams are vital, the students raised concerns about their safety amid the pandemic.
