Book publisher Balbharti recently made changes to its Class II Mathematics textbooks and the alterations made to the textbooks have been deemed as very surprising. Accordingly, the teachers have been directed to teach as per the new textbook pattern.

The change in the textbook has been initiated to make the pronunciation of numbers in Marathi easier for Class II students.

The changes have been made as the Class II students cannot read difficult joint words at such a young age. Therefore, even after the Marathi word for twenty-one is 'एकवीस', in the new textbook, it has been written as 'वीस एक'. While the idea behind the change was to make learning easier, the new textbooks have confusingly made the task difficult for students.

Accordingly, all the numbers between 1-100 that have joint words while being pronounced, have been changed to help the students learn.

However, the teachers will now be concerned about teaching the students about the correct pronunciation in higher classes. The changes are bound to cause various issues for the teachers and the students.
