According to the latest reports, on Wednesday, May 11, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and its education department launched four new initiatives for Mumbai's civic schools. These entail offering safe access to children to travel to school by curating internal as well as external structural alterations. Apart from this, they will be conducting health and awareness camps for mental, dental health and diabetes.

One of the initiatives launched by the BMC education department on Wednesday was the "Safe Access to Schools". The department looks to provide safe travel to school which entails experience inside the school premises. The department reportedly stated that the Mumbai Public Schools (MPS) which were previously called civic schools are placed in locations with considerable traffic flow, accounts cited.

By means of the "Safe Access to Schools" initiative, the entire peripheral of 500 meters around each MPS will be specifically designed to make it safe as well as accessible for children. This will entail stringent traffic rules and designing bus stops. The civic body will receive assistance from the WRI to plan this.

Taking to Twitter to speak about this initiative, Aaditya Thackeray, Mumbai suburban guardian minister said, "As we launch project “Safe Schools”, we gear up to provide a safe entry and exit point for every student at school with basic civic interventions. Furthermore, once inside the school, we’re working on oral hygiene, mental healthcare and diabetes management."

He added, "Safe School is a right of every child on our planet. They depend on us for their safe upbringing in schools, as much for equality in quality of education."

Similarly, Maharashtra school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad, while speaking at the occasion elaborated, "We want our children to study better & feel safe while getting to & returning from school. Participated in the inauguration of a commendable initiative by @mybmc to ensure implementation of safe school zones around schools to make roads & footpaths near schools child friendly."

She added that the initiative will complement other measures such as CCTV coverage, formation of Sakhi Savitri committees and collaboration with local self-government and local police.

Gaikwad elucidated, "Various measures are being taken in the state to improve the access and quality to education. Our government schools are being transformed into model schools with better physical & learning infrastructure. Our effort will be to study this @mybmc model and apply it across the state."

In addition to the "Safe Access To School" initiative, other initiatives look to tap into any health problems that children face early on to ensure that corrective measures can be undertaken. It has been reported that these drives are designed keeping in mind the socio-economic background of those who attend civic schools.
