University of Mumbai’s chaos regarding late results and an unorganised schedule has led to the decline in NAAC ranking for respective colleges affiliated under MU. Already the work of the hostel was pending and now, the university has closed the student mess too, which has caused problems for its students regarding their accommodation and food.

Earlier in June 2017, the university’s hostel ‘Karmaveer Bhurao Patil’ was closed for the repair work. The administration said that the main mess would be kept closed for the repairs and students living in the hostel were given temporary facility.

The students were charged 32 rupees per plate for a meal in the University mess. However, they were charged 40 rupees per plate for a meal in the temporary mess, which had to be paid before the meal. Unfortunately, the temporary service provided by the university to the students has also closed a few days ago without any notices. Now, the students have no other place to eat their meals and so they rely on eateries outside.

Students in MU come from villages all across the state and even country. Many of them are from the economically weaker background and with the mess closed, it would be really difficult for them to afford the outdoor meals.

From last four-five days, we are eating from outside the university and we cannot afford the outdoor food every day. We did not even receive any notification from the hostel office regarding the closing of the mess. We will protest if the issue is not resolved.” Amit Sharma, Student.

Reacting to the whole issue the hostel warden, Dr Santosh Gite said that “Contract for the second month will start in 10 to 15 days and the Gaware Canteen of the neighbouring building has been contacted to provide temporary facilities to the students.”
